How to plan your banking preparation

Banking exam study plan with a calendar, books and progress checklist

A useful preparation plan begins with a specific examination, not a pile of unrelated notes. Identify the bank, post and level you want to target, then work from the syllabus that applies to that recruitment.

1. Identify the examination

Keep the advertisement number, post, level, application deadline and official syllabus together. Similar post names can have different requirements. Treat the issuing authority’s current notice as the source of truth.

2. Turn the syllabus into a checklist

Break each subject into small topics. Mark a topic as not started, learning, or ready for revision. A checklist makes it easier to see what remains than a count of hours studied.

3. Give each study session a clear task

Choose a manageable concept, study it, then answer a few relevant questions. For accounting, work through transactions on paper. For management, explain a concept in your own words. For numerical topics, write out the calculation.

4. Keep a mistake notebook

Record the question, the correct reasoning and why your answer went wrong. Separate a knowledge gap from a calculation slip or a misunderstood instruction. Revise the cause, not just the answer letter.

5. Review your plan each week

Spend more time on important syllabus topics you still find difficult. When using a full mock exam, confirm its timing, subjects and marking scheme against the applicable official examination rules.

A simple weekly routine

  • Learn and practise several small topics.
  • Revisit earlier mistakes.
  • Complete a mixed practice session.
  • Update the checklist and plan the next week.

This guide offers a study method. It does not replace an official syllabus or guarantee an exam result.
