UN organs for Loksewa: a practical revision method with common MCQ traps

International organizations appear in section 5 of the Level 4 pre-test syllabus. For the United Nations, learn the purpose of each body before memorizing abbreviations. A question may test whether you can distinguish a principal organ from a specialized agency.
Build a simple organization map
Article 7 of the UN Charter establishes six principal organs. Group them by function: the General Assembly represents the membership, the Security Council addresses its peace-and-security mandate, the Economic and Social Council coordinates work in its field, the International Court of Justice performs the principal judicial role, and the Secretariat carries out the organization’s day-to-day work. Keep the Trusteeship Council on the map even though its operations are suspended.
Three distinctions worth practising
- Assembly versus court: universal state representation is different from a judicial body made up of elected judges.
- Principal organ versus specialized agency: UNESCO, WHO and ILO belong in a different category from the six organs listed by Charter Article 7.
- Institution versus office-holder: an institution’s mandate is a more stable revision fact than the name of its current leader.
Turn a fact into an explanation
Suppose an MCQ asks which principal organ has representation from every UN member state. Choosing General Assembly is only the first step. Explain why the International Court of Justice is a judicial institution and why an agency such as UNESCO is a different category. That explanation helps you handle a differently worded question.
Use a two-column error log
In the first column, record the category you confused: organ, agency, regional grouping or financial institution. In the second, write one distinguishing function. Revise the distinction rather than copying the whole question repeatedly.
Do not assume that studying the UN completes section 5. The official syllabus separately includes Nepal’s international relations, SAARC and other regional and financial organizations. Check their own official sources as you expand your notes. Current memberships and leadership can change.
Practise bilingual international-organization questions. This is a small original learning set, not a full section mock.
